Core Practitioner Framework

The 75/25 Scoring Maximizer

Capitalizing on the heavy MCQ weighting while locking in partial credit on CBQs.

  1. 1Clear the 50% MCQ Floor: Never rush through MCQs—a strong MCQ performance can virtually guarantee a passing score.
  2. 2Banking Partial Credit on CBQs: Graders award points for correct formulas and intermediate calculations even if the final number is off.
  3. 3Never Submit Early: Use every minute of the 4-hour window to audit variance formulas and cost allocations.

The 50% MCQ Gatekeeper Rule

The CMA exam features a unique gatekeeping mechanism: if you do not get at least 50% of the 100 multiple-choice questions correct, your exam session terminates immediately and you are not permitted to see or attempt the Constructed Business Questions (CBQs). Performing well on MCQs is therefore non-negotiable.

Ava:Marcus, many candidates do not realize the CMA exam has a literal gatekeeper built into the software.
Marcus:It is the 50 percent rule. If you do not answer at least 50 out of the 100 MCQs correctly in the first three hours, the test ends. You do not even get to see the Constructed Business Questions.
Ava:And MCQs represent 75 percent of your total scaled score. If you average 80 percent on the MCQs, you only need modest partial credit on the CBQs to clear the 360 passing mark.
